Topsoil Calculator
Calculate the cubic yards or bags of topsoil needed to level, fill or top-dress an area.
Calculator
| Tons (about 1.2 t/yd³, +5%) | 1.56 tons |
|---|---|
| Cubic yards (exact) | 1.23 yd³ |
| Cubic feet | 33.3 ft³ |
| 2 cu ft bags | 18 bags |
How it is calculated
10 ft × 10 ft × 4 in ÷ 12 = 33.3 cubic feet = 1.23 cubic yards. Add 5% for settling and uneven ground: 1.30 cubic yards (about 1.56 tons).
About this calculator
Topsoil is used to level low spots, fill raised beds and prepare ground for a lawn. The volume is the area times the depth. About 4 inches is a common depth for preparing a new lawn, while thin top-dressing uses far less.
Soil is sold in bulk by the cubic yard or in bags. Its weight changes a lot with moisture, so the tonnage shown is only a rough guide. Order by volume and ask the supplier how they measure a yard.
Worked examples
| Project | Cubic yards to order (+5%) | Rough cost |
|---|---|---|
| a 10x10 ft area topped with 4 in of soil | 1.30 yd³ | $19.44 – $64.81 |
| a 20x20 ft area topped with 4 in of soil | 5.19 yd³ | $77.78 – $259 |
| a 30x40 ft area topped with 2 in of soil | 7.78 yd³ | $117 – $389 |
| a 25x50 ft area topped with 4 in of soil | 16.20 yd³ | $243 – $810 |
Buying notes
- Soil settles, so ordering a little extra is normal.
- Loosen compacted ground before adding topsoil so roots can move between layers.
- Ask whether the soil is screened and whether it is mixed with compost or sand.

How to measure and use this calculator
- Measure the area to be filled or leveled.
- Choose a depth: about four inches for new lawns, less for top-dressing.
- Read cubic yards or bag counts.
- Add a little extra because soil settles after watering.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring settling.
- Putting new soil over compacted subsoil without loosening it first.
- Burying the soil line against the house siding.
Tips
- Four inches is a common depth for new lawns; thin top-dressing needs only half an inch to an inch.
- Soil settles, so ordering 5–10% extra is normal.
- Topsoil weight varies a lot with moisture; the tonnage here is only a rough guide.
Frequently asked questions
How many cubic yards of topsoil per 1,000 sq ft?
At 4 inches deep, about 12.3 cubic yards.
How many cubic yards of topsoil do I need for a lawn?
Multiply area in square feet by the depth in feet, then divide by 27. This calculator does that for you.
Can I spread topsoil over existing grass?
A thin top-dressing of about half an inch is fine. A thick layer can smother the grass, so remove or till the old lawn first.
