Gravel Calculator

Convert an area and depth into cubic yards and tons of gravel.

Calculator

Tons (about 1.4 t/yd³, +5%)1.36 tons
Cubic yards to order (+5%)0.97 yd³
Cubic yards (exact)0.93 yd³
Cubic feet25.0 ft³
Rough material cost$34.03 – $88.47per ton, delivered; decorative stone costs more

How it is calculated

10 ft × 10 ft × 3 in ÷ 12 = 25.0 cubic feet = 0.93 cubic yards. Add 5% for settling and uneven ground: 0.97 cubic yards (about 1.36 tons).

About this calculator

Gravel is bought by weight (tons) or by volume (cubic yards). The calculator finds the volume from length, width and depth, then converts to tons with a typical density.

Density varies: crushed stone and gravel commonly weigh about 1.4 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard depending on stone size, moisture and compaction. This calculator uses 1.4, the low end, so the tonnage your supplier quotes for a specific product may be higher. Ask for the weight per cubic yard of the stone you choose.

How to measure and use this calculator

  1. Measure length and width of the area.
  2. Pick a depth: around three inches for paths, more for driveways.
  3. Read both cubic yards and tons; suppliers sell either way.
  4. Ask your supplier for the weight per cubic yard of the exact stone.

Frequently asked questions

How many tons of gravel in a cubic yard?

Commonly about 1.4 to 1.7 tons for crushed stone and gravel, depending on size, moisture and compaction. This calculator uses 1.4, the low end, so your supplier's tonnage may be higher.

How do I convert cubic yards of gravel to tons?

Multiply cubic yards by the density, commonly 1.4 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard. Your supplier can give the exact figure for the product.

How deep should gravel be?

Paths and garden areas often get about 2 to 3 inches. Driveways usually need 4 to 6 inches or more in total, laid in layers over a compacted base.
